RMR Testing 101 — What It Means & Why It Matters
If you're tracking calories, adjusting your macros, or wondering why fat-loss feels slow — RMR testing will no doubt provide some clarity. It’s one of the simplest, most effective tools to personalize your nutrition…and it consists of ~10-15 minutes of basically trying to fall asleep.
What is RMR?
First, what is metabolism? If you looked it up, the technical definition would be something like “the whole sum of processes that occur within an organism to sustain life.”
However, when we think of metabolism, we’re generally thinking of resting metabolic rate (RMR) — the number of calories your body burns at rest to sustain its current form. RMR usually accounts for ~60–70% of your total daily energy expenditure (TDEE).
Your RMR is unique to you — and things like age, sex, body composition, stress, and sleep all affect it.
Why estimating Doesn't Work
Online calculators & activity trackers can be off by ~20-30%. That’s more than enough to stall fat loss, drain energy, or cause under-eating. Imagine hitting your targets perfectly & still not making progress…cue *calorie deficits don’t work for me* folks 🫢
With RMR testing, you’ll learn:
How much to eat to lose fat and/or build muscle
When you're under-recovering or under-fueling
How your metabolism responds over time to training, diet/lifestyle & body-composition changes.
